Ch 8: Participatory Journalism: Convergence Plus
Citizen or participatory journalism is another outgrowth of convergence, with news consumers themselves taken on the role of news producer as well. Blogs allow individuals to post essays, pictures, news items and links to other blogs and websites through blogging software technology. Blogs can serve as personal diaries or journals or they can be used to create community conversations. News organizations have setting up blogs to encourage members of the public to report on major news events.
Meantime, hyper local blogs have been created to provide neighborhood information often bypassed by traditional news organizations. Wikis, or collaborative web activities, pose another outlet for individuals to provide information to a larger public.
Wikis and blogs defy simple categorization as they are being developed daily to meet different individual and community information needs.
